Will AI replace my staff?
Updated .
The short answer
In most small businesses, AI is best used to take repetitive admin off people, not to replace them. It's good at drafting, summarising, sorting and moving information, and it still needs a person to check its work, handle the exceptions and look after customers. HappyOwl, a UK AI consultancy, never sets out to replace any member of a client's team.
What is AI good at, and what isn't it?
Good at
- Drafting first versions of emails, quotes and documents.
- Summarising long calls, threads and reports.
- Sorting and tagging incoming enquiries.
- Moving information from one system to another.
Not good at
- Knowing your customers the way your team does.
- Judgement calls, awkward conversations and anything that needs a bit of tact.
- Spotting when its own answer is confidently wrong. Someone always needs to check.
So where does the time go?
Back into the work you hired people for in the first place: looking after customers, doing the job properly, winning new work. In a small business, hardly anyone is short of things to do. The question is whether they spend their day on the work that matters or on copying and pasting.
How should I talk to my team about AI?
- Bring them in early. People fear what they're not told about.
- Ask them which tasks they'd ditch. They know where the tedious bits are better than anyone.
- Be straight about the goal. "We want to take the admin off you" is a very different message from silence.
- Start with something that helps them directly. Nothing builds trust like getting an hour back.
Where does HappyOwl stand?
We use AI to take the admin off your team so they can do the work you hired them for. We never seek to replace any member of your team. If that's the brief, we're not the right consultancy for you, and we'll say so.
